Is the United States celebrated Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) system a fraud? The President's top Scientific Advisor thinks so, but before his suspicions can be proven he is found tortured and murdered.

 

As Memorial Day dedication of the Nation's first ABM installation guarding Washington, D.C. nears two reporters covering the story stumble across a link between the Advisor's murder and a former student of his, an eccentric design engineer, who the Advisor may have entrusted with finding out how the ABM deception was accomplished.

 

As the reporters close in on what alone might be the story of a lifetime the stakes are raised with a series of murders and the realization that the ABM subterfuge is just part of a monstrous terrorist plan to launch an ICBM loaded with deadly nuclear material at the Capital.

 

While the deadly ICBM speeds across the lands of the Middle East over the Atlantic towards Washington the reporters race to uncover the connection between the suspect ABM system, the murders, and the eccentric engineer who may now be the only person with the key to destroying the ICBM and saving the Capital. David F. Depcik is a retired Industrial Engineer whose rich and varied thirty-five year professional career included a variety of positions. With degrees from Illinois Institute of Technology and University of Illinois in hand David began his career working for the Department of Defense, Naval Ordnance Systems Command where his work was recognized in three Letters of Commendation. After the Vietnam War David went on to a career primarily in local government where he applied the principles of industrial engineering to a wide variety of activities and assignments. In 1994 his efforts for Cook County Government were recognized in his selection as Professional Employee of the Year.

 

Today David and his wife Lana enjoy an active retirement. With time at last to spend on his avocations of writing and inventing David produced his first full length novel, ABM, and has patented a children's sport product he hopes will encourage healthy, active play. Lana is active in volunteer work at Naper Settlement in their hometown of Naperville, Illinois, and is an accomplished water color artist. In between times David and Lana visit with their children Dr. Natalie Depcik-Smith (and husband Mike), and Dr. Christopher Depcik (and wife Jennifer) ... and root for the White Sox!
