Description
"Two friends reconvene to repeat their trip driving the length of the Mississippi River after thirty-five years. That second trip, in time as well as space, is the subject of this narrative, book-length poem, a poem that flows the length of America, spiced with quotes from Mark Twain. A poem of people, and places, and a historic surprise – but you'll have to give yourself the pleasure of reading Riverborne to find out what it is." – Richard Silberg, author of Deconstruction of the Blues. “Carroll and friend encounter a contemporary world with all its brash billboard culture, commercialized sentimentality and cheap tourism. But they also tap into the grandeur of the American river and the power it still has to evoke the spirit that fills Twain's Huck Finn. The two aspects are like oil and water, continually separating and coming together. Carroll brings his historical awareness to focus on the tragedies as well as the glories of the American past. As a poet he has a fine eye for the found poetry of the small towns and the natural power of the river.” – John T. Daniel, author of Missing the Boat. “Riverborne is a journey through memory and time… a clear-eyed and saddening look at what America's great river, the Mississippi, has come to. Peter Carroll brings his historian's eye and a strong sense of life and adventure to his odyssey. Beautifully descriptive passages draw us into the river's luminous life, and hauntingly observed details show us the lonely and diminished world of the people who live in small towns along it. This is a book by someone who knows where and how to look.” - Charlotte Muse, co-author of Trio.
