Description
Where’s Evelyn?
The 1953 Babysitter’s kidnapping that shook the nation

When Evelyn Hartley disappeared while babysitting in 1953, never to be seen again, national media descended on La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Fifty-plus years later, everyone who lived in La Crosse at the time still has a story about how this 15-year-old’s disappearance affected them. They were terrified because, as a Detroit News reporter put it, “She was an ordinary girl in an ordinary home and someone had come in and taken her.”

Where’s Evelyn? tells the story of this cold case and it’s continuing impact on La Crosse.

About the Author:
When Susan T. Hessel arrived in La Crosse in 1974 and heard the story of Evelyn Hartley, a chill ran down her spine. It so fascinated her that she jumped at the chance to tell Evelyn’s story. Hessel, a personal historian who has written two dozen “slice of La Crosse life histories,” wrote this book to put a face to Evelyn as a “real person” who continues to be missed by her friends. She also describes the state of the investigation, including new evidence that showed up while she wrote the book.
